How long does it take to get paternity test results?

When the decision is made to undergo paternity testing, playing the waiting game can make life seem like it’s standing still. How long does it take to get results from a paternity test?

The answer to this question really depends on you, and whether you are participating in a legal paternity test, or a personal paternity test. The testing process at the laboratory is the same with either test. We release results  in two business days once all samples arrive at the laboratory. The collection process may make getting paternity test results take longer.

Legal paternity test

For legal paternity testing the collection process is different from a personal paternity test because collection is done by a non-interested third party, and not by the participants. When testing with IDENTIGENE, our knowledgeable client support team will assist with locating a facility close to the participants and scheduling the appointment, as well as taking care of all necessary paperwork. We try to schedule the appointment to be within 24-48 hrs from the time the case is originally set up, depending on your needs and availability. Once the collection process is complete, the collection facility will overnight the samples back to the IDENTIGENE laboratory. Once the samples arrive at the laboratory the testing process is two business days, then results are released. For fast receipt of the results you may choose to receive your results online. With your login (email address) and password from the order form,  simply login to our website at to pull up printable results. This is an option IDENTIGENE has offered since 2007.

Personal paternity testing

The personal paternity test is a self collection test. You can purchase the IDENTIGENE paternity collection kit at your local pharmacy. Currently, our test kits are available in CVS, Rite Aide, Walgreens and Walmart, nationwide. Once you purchase the kit and collect the DNA samples in the convenience of your own home, you mail the samples to the IDENTIGENE laboratory for testing. The testing process at the laboratory is the same testing process as the legal paternity test. Your results are released in two business days from the time the samples arrive at the laboratory. Again, with your login (email address) and password set up by you, the results can be viewed and printed online.

IDENTIGENE Client Support

We understand there may be questions along the way, sometime, you may just need to put your mind at ease with knowing the testing is going the way it should. With our client support available Monday-Friday 9am-8pm EST, they are available to answer all your questions about your paternity test and to support you through the process. They are knowledgeable and understand the importance of the test being performed.

HOw much longer should I have to wait to get results?.

    • Hi Paul,
I am assuming you have mailed in a paternity test? If so, the testing time frame is 2 full business days once we receive your samples. If you provided an email address, you will be receiving an email notification to let you know the results are ready for you to access online or over the phone. You can always call in to our client support as well to check the status of your test. Please note yesterday was a state holiday in Utah, and our offices and lab were closed, yesterday will not count as a business day. I hope this helps answer your question. If you would like to check the status over the phone or have more questions, please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

  2. I neglected to enter an e_mail address at the time I sent the sample and have since acquired one. The recording I have been calling is stating you have not received any sample yet my bank statement shows the charges subtracted and I am concerned. Can you please explain this?

    • Hi Mark,
We apologize for the confusion. Typically, with our recorded message, you must enter the exact phone number used on your order form. Sometimes it will not recognize or match up with just the name or case number if the phone number is not the same. There may have also been an error in transferring the number from your order form to our database. I recommend you call our friendly client support so we can personally help you locate your case and give you peace of mind that your samples have arrived safely. If you have been charged for the lab fee, this means we have processed your samples. Our friendly client support will be happy to let you know the status of testing upon verifying your case password. I hope this information helps. Please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

  3. Hi my name is Monique Last week the 26 June we did a paternity test at pathcare the alleged father paid for the test gave his personal details and everything the problem isThey will be sending the results back to him how will I know when he will get it I want to know how i can get my own results even through the phone can they email it to me if the results are availible please.

    • Hi Monique,
Thank you for your question! Did you provide samples for the DNA test as well? If so, you can call our client support to set up your own password if you don’t know the one initially set up by the alleged father. We do not e-mail results, but, when setting up your password, you can also create a login in order to access the results online. To set up your own information, you will need to fill out a Report Release Form and send it in, via fax or email, with a copy or image of your identification. If you were not included in the testing, you can still get results if you can prove you are the biological mother of the child. Doing so includes filling out the Report Release Form, including a copy or image of your ID, and a copy or image of the child’s birthday certificate. I hope this information is helpful, if you have more questions please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

  4. I sent my tests in on Friday of last week and Im in Ohio. Would I get my results back today? If so when?

    • Hi Nicholas,
Did you use our envelope? Typically, our envelope will take 5-19 mailing days for it to arrive in our lab. After it arrives, we will send you an email notification to let you know we have received your samples. Testing will typically take 2 full business days to complete, we will also be sending you an email notification to let you know your results are ready. I hope this information is helpful. Thank you for your patience and comment!

  5. I plan on purchasing one of the tests to. I just need to get a general idea on how much everything is gonna cost and to make sure I will have my test results within 2 days. I plan on swabbing my son the day he is born.

    • Hi Shalonda,
Thanks for your interest in IDENTIGENE! If you just want a DNA test done for personal reasons, then the DNA Paternity Test collection kit is perfect for you. If you need the test for legal reasons, you will need to give us a call at 1-888-404-4363.

The personal DNA Paternity Test can be purchased at your local Walmart, Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies. This kit will include everything you need to send in your samples, and simply makes the process more convenient for you. The biggest advantage of being able to buy the kit at your local pharmacy is that we are able to provide the testing at a more reasonable price. You can pick up the kit for about $30 at any of the participating pharmacies, and the lab fee to test 1 alleged father, 1 child and the biological mother (strongly recommended, but optional) is $129.
Have in mind, if you chose to send the samples to our lab in the envelope provided in the kit, it can take anywhere from 5-10 mailing days for our lab to receive it. If you wish to expedite the turn around time, you may consider using an express courier (such as Fedex or UPS) in order for the samples to arrive to our lab sooner. Once the samples arrive in our lab and are processed is when the 2 full business days will be necessary in order to provide results.

I hope this answers your questions. Feel free to give us a call 1-888-404-4363 with any further questions you may have and we will be more than happy to help you! Thank you for your comment!

You are more than welcome to call for updates over the phone, you can anticipate your results by the end of business day Tuesday. 10. Hello my name is Janet we purchased Identagene.the problem is that the alleged father filled the form out
I wanted to know how will I be able to get my results. I don’t have a password or nothing at all…can u help me out with some information

    • Hi Janet,
Are you the biological mother, payee or a participant?
If so, you can set your own password and be able to access the results. We would need you to fill out a Report Release Form and provide us with a copy or image of your ID if you are already listed as a participant or payee. If you are the biological mother and are not listed, we would need both these things as well as a birth certificate. Our friendly client service representatives would be more than happy to send you the documents needed to set up a password. I hope this information helps. You can reach us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

  11. I am concerned. I am waiting to get my results back today but I have read lots of comments that people are getting negative results back and have had the test redone in another lab after this was done and then would get a positive result. I am so nervous! People are saying they done the test all the right was when it was mailed to identagene.

    • Hi Puzzled,
Great Question! IDENTIGENE provides the most accurate testing available on the market today. We have worked to prevent any mistakes throughout the process and provide our customers with 100% accurate results. Our 100% accuracy relies on the samples we receive in the mail. When doing a personal at-home test, we trust our customers to provide us with the samples they would like tested which is how we are able to obtain an accurate result based on the samples received. We are unable to guarantee a certain DNA profile belongs to the name on the envelope in which it is enclosed, but we value our customer’s integrity in doing so.

If you have any concern with your results changing when doing it through another lab, we recommend testing legally. Did you witness the collection and sending off of your samples? Having a legal DNA test means we have a disinterested third party collect, witness and send the samples to our facility. Leaving no room for tampering or fraud. This process also includes proper identification and chain of custody forms which allows the results to uphold in court.

I hope this information helps. If you continue to have any questions, please feel free to call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM, ET. Thank you for your comment!

  12. If its a legal paternity test who gets the results of the test?

    • Hi Dalia,

Thank you for your patience in waiting for our response! Anyone who is listed on the account as a contact, payee or a participant will have access to the results and they will be asked to verify their name and the password on the account.

We will not withhold test results from anyone who has consented for their own DNA samples to be tested, because in providing a sample for testing they are the one who has requested the test. If the biological mother of the child is not participating but she is contacting us, she could also have access to the account. As long as she can prove that she is the legal guardian of the child in the test and have set up a password with us she may also obtain results.
You can reach us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. I hope this helped answer your question! Thank you for your comment!

  13. I participated “as mother” in a kit testing. I would also like to recieve results. Separate from the “potential” father. He requested his own login and password. If I fax the paper in for the request, may I have my own LOGIN?

    Thank you

    • Hi Amy,

Thank you for your comment. We know that this can be a life changing process and we are more than happy to assist you in obtaining your results. If you would like to set-up your own login/password, you will need to fill out a Report Release Form and either fax (801-462-1403) or email ( it back to us with a copy of your photo ID. If you have questions about this process, please give our friendly client support representatives a call at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday- Friday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. ET. Thank you for choosing IDENTIGENE!

  15. Bess Connell Coolen

Just wanted to say hank you for your kit we found at Wal-Mart, sure helped with daughter’s father recently passed away unexpectedly at the age od 55. I and all the family are a little nervous playing the “waiting game” we should have done this long ago. we just can’t afford for anything to mess up because her father was cremated on Tuesday! So we are all praying nothing goes wrong and the test comes back ok. It’s not that her father has anything it’s just she wants to feel like she “belong” to a family. Thank you Identigene and all the workers.

    • Hi Bess,

Our condolences to you and your family during this time. Thank you for sharing you and daughters story with us, we will be sure to pass this message on to the IDENTIGENE team. If you haven’t recieved your results by now, please let us know and we would be happy to look into the case for you. Thank you for choosing Identigene!

  16. If you wanted to cancel before processing begun would that be possible? Also would you be able to get a full refund?

    • Hi Tina,

We look at refunds on a case by case basis. It would be best if you contacted our friendly client support staff at 1-888-404-4363 and we would be happy to assist you with this. Thank you!

  17. I collected finger nails and hair for my baby. Is that enough to process the paternity test? if yes what do i have to provide from my side for the test?

    • Hi Sewanou,

We do accept samples other than the standard, buccal swabs that are included in our retail paternity test, however they need to be approved by our laboratory before you send them in for testing. You should contact our friendly client support team to see if we can take your samples as we want to make sure that your samples will yield strong results. For instance, some samples are better quality than others and therefore can give more conclusive results. Our phone number is 1-888-404-GENE, Monday- Friday ET.

  18. Do yall mail the results out

    • Hi Tonya,

Results are available online and by phone. If you would like a hard copy mailed, you will need to call us at 1-888-404-4363, Monday- Friday 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. ET. We offer one free hard mailed copy at no charge to you, additional copies cost an additional fee. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you for choosing Identigene!

  19. If I sent the dna test out yesterday how long does it take to get to the lab.. and when possibly will I know the results

    • Hi Nicole,

If you used the prepaid envelope included in your kit, it can take anywhere from 7-10 days depending on where you live in relation to our lab and also any postal service error. Once the samples arrive to our lab, you will be notified by email if you included it on your order form. This will signal that your testing has begun. Testing takes two business days. You will also receive an email notifying you when your results are ready. At that time you can call to get results over the phone or you can login online at with your email as your username and password. Hope this helps you estimate when your results will be ready. You are also welcome to call our friendly client support staff to check the status of your case at 1-888-404-GENE M-F 9 a.m.- 8 a.m. ET.

  20. Heyy Im due in june but need to do a paternity test for my baby’s father because he’s having doubts. Am I able to do that in the hospital and get my results before I leave. because I sorta need to know who the father is for my baby’s birth certificate before they can let me leave the hospital!!

    • Hi JuneBaby,

Thank you for your question. We do offer a Pre-Natal Paternity Test for $400 and it will take 3-4 weeks to process. Please consult your physician or genetic counselor for professional advice regarding prenatal sample collection. There are two types of DNA samples that can be collected for this testing, and both are considered to be special specimens. The first option is a CVS (Chronic Veli Sample) and is typically collected between the 9th and 12th week of pregnancy. You can speak with your doctor to see if they will be willing to collect this type of sample for you. The second option is an amniocentesis and is typically collected between the 12th and 21st week of pregnancy.

DNA from non-standard specimens (anything other than buccal swabs or a fresh blood draw) is often degraded or contaminated. Depending upon the source and age of the special specimen, we cannot guarantee that DNA of sufficient quantity or quality will be obtained and therefore it might not be possible to generate a full, or even partial, genetic profile from these specimens.

When you have decided to go forward with this type of test, once you have found a doctor to perform the sample collection for you, you will need to give us a call at 888-404-4363 and speak with one of our DNA consultants to set up your account. We will need to send a special collection kit to the doctor who will be taking the sample along with the required paperwork for a special specimen.

I hope this answers your question. Feel free to give us a call at 888-404-4363 if you have any further questions and we will be more than happy to assist you.

  21. My kids father took a DNA test without my permission and i got the papers from him once the test came back. I had talked to a friend before who said they got their results in to days and one friend told me their results came back in a week or two BUT FOR SOME ODD REASON his test is dated A MONTH AFTER THE SEND IN DATE. For example he sent it in on the 17 of Aug he did not get it until the 17 of Sept. Also when he received the results i was told that someone from your company called HIM. Is their any way any of this is true and being the MOTHER do i have ANY rights calling to inquire about the test if i have a copy

    • Hello frappecapp,

IDENTIGENE gives paternity test results in 2 business days. The only exception to this is if there is a problem with the case such as sample contamination or they need the mother to be included in the test in order to get a conclusive result. If there were an exception like this, we quickly resolve the problem so that we can release results as soon as possible, usually within the week. These exceptions are rare and the large majority of cases produce results in 2 business days.

In addition, it is our policy that we do not make any outbound phone calls except if there is a problem with the case like stated above.

As the mother of the child, you do have rights to inquire about the test. We suggest that you call our customer service line about the situation and they will be able to assist you in getting results directly from us. Their phone number is 1-888-404-4363. If the alleged father did not include your information on the test, you will need to fill out a Report Release Form and send it to us along with your photo ID and the child’s birth certificate. Once this is completed, we can release results to you. Best of luck to you!

  22. How long does a take home DNA test results take to come back?

    • Hi Essence,

Once we receive samples at our lab testing takes 2 business days. Our offices are closed for holidays and weekends, so you’ll want to factor that into your result time frame as well.

  23. IM in KansasCity, MO , so i can do the dna test on the day the baby is born? && how much will i pay if i do it in the hospital?

    • Hi Nana,

Yes you can take our DNA paternity test on the day the baby is born. If you take the test yourself while you are in the hospital the cost is no different than doing it at your home.

You can purchase the IDENTIGENE DNA Paternity test at your local pharmacy. They are sold for $29.99 in CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Walmart. Once you have the kit there are three sets of swabs to collect cheek cell samples, one for the child, one for the father, and an optional set for the mother. We encourage the mother to participate as it will strengthen the results of the test. Once samples have been collected they will be placed in their own sample envelope and then packaged together in the pre-paid mailer and sent to our laboratory with a $129 lab processing fee. The total cost is $159 not including taxes.

If you want the hospital staff to collect the samples, you will probably incur a fee from them.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact our friendly client support staff at 1-888-404-4363, and they would be happy to answer any other questions you may have. Best to you and your family!

  24. It has been 9 business days and I still have not received my results. I’m in Florida. It’s taking way too long. It says 2to 3 business days and the results are still not here. I made sure everything was paid and even made numerous calls to IDENTIGENE.

    • Hi Hannah,

We apologize for any delay in your results as we know that they can be life changing. If you could send us the email and/or case number associated with your test we will be able to check into your case and will promptly get in touch with you about what we find. Thank you.

  25. How much total will the store bought test, the shipping, and the processing of the results cost?

    • Gabby, it depends on what drugstore you buy it from. We have a suggested retail of $29.99. We provide a postage paid envelope with the kit and charge a $129 lab fee. Currently, we are running a promotion of $20 off the lab fee. You can print off a coupon from our website, until 7/31/12. So the whole testing process would cost you $139. If you need a legal collection (court admissible) the laboratory fee is higher because we need to hire a collector to witness the testing of all parties as well as file the proper paperwork. You would add $200 to the cost. Hope this helps. You can call us with additional questions at 888-404-GENE.

  26. my question is how long does it take when a state of michigan takes a dna test from my husband after a woman contact him after 9 years saying he fathered her daugther who he was with only 2 weeks he didnt know he had a child the mother never told him and this woman is in las vegas NV we waited 5 weeks now no results

    • Hello Amber,
Unfortunately, I do not have information regarding the State of Michigan’s time table for paternity tests. Your husband will need to contact the State or a family law attorney for guidance. If you take an IDENTIGENE DNA paternity test, you will have results in two business days after we receive the samples.

      Best of luck.

  27. Deshondra Thomas

I was wonderin if its possible to do dna at tha hospital before the baby leaves, and how long is tha process? Ive heard stories whr tha baby has 2 b months old before test being done, then I read tht it doesn’t take long. Also can u test both parties at once

    • Hi Deshondra,
Sorry for the delay in answering your question. My advice would be for the person wanting a DNA paternity test to purchase a kit at any major pharmacy (except in New York; special rules apply) and bring it to the hospital. It is recommended that mother, alleged father and child all submit DNA samples. If the alleged father is at the hospital, absolutely, swab him there. Our kit comes with three packs of three swabs and easy to follow instructions. The hardest thing about collecting DNA on a newborn is getting the swab in their mouth and rubbing the inside of their cheek three separate times. If this can be done, that is all we will need to run the test. Once we receive the swabs at our laboratory, in Salt Lake City, UT, it takes 2 business days to get results.

Feel free to contact customer service at 888-404-GENE. Thanks!

      • But one of tha possibilties are incarcerated

        • Hi Deshondra,
I would advise you to contact our client support office at 888-404-GENE or go to our website and conduct and “online chat” during business hours. There are other possibilities for you to get results. You could test a sibling of the alleged father or a parent of the alleged father. You can also arrange for Identigene to send you more swabs for additional fathers. Hope this helps.
