STR
Definition:
STR stands for short tandem repeat. A certain gene may be a repeating string of DNA. For example, a DNA lab may find that the pattern, 'GATTACA', repeats itself 7, 8, 12, or 33 times. The pattern may repeat a different number of times for each allele (one from the mother and one from the father).
In DNA paternity testing, STRs are measured at each locus (location, or marker) in a person's DNA profile and are often shown as two numbers (two alleles), such as '15,18.' The allele numbers represent the number of repeats found on each chromosome (one from the mother and one from the father of a child).
