Not long after Mendel's pea plant study, in 1869, Swiss physician Frederick Miescher isolated and named what we now know as DNA, though it took almost another century to really begin to understand it.

Dozens of other discoveries were necessary, too, such as X-Ray technology, microscope improvements, computer database programming, and many smaller discoveries in biology in before science arrived at DNA paternity testing as we know it today.
