ABO Blood Type and Paternity.

Determining paternity based on blood type preceded DNA testing and, like eye color inheritance, was largley based on the work of Gregor Mendel. Theories about genes and human development eventually led great minds like Watson and Crick to unravel the DNA double helix model, paving the way for modern geneticists to sequence the entire human genome in 2001.

ABO BLOOD TYPES EXPLAINED

Human blood types stem from dominant/recessive genes - similar to Mendel's pea plant flowers. Dominant blood types include "A" and "B"; type "O" is recessive. Alleles for type "A" and type "B" blood are co-dominant which means that, when both are present, the resulting blood type is "AB." The table below illustrates possible blood types resulting from common blood types, "A", "B", "AB", and "O".. If the mother's and father's blood types are known:
